FIREFIGHTERS FIND BOWES As the race for the suns heats up
New Essendon coach Brad Scott has reportedly met with Jack Bowes as the race for the Gold Coast Suns midfielder and defense heats up.
Bowes is under contract through the end of 2024, but is expected to make up to $850,000 next year on a heavily protected contract, with the Suns willing to unload him along with the No. 1 pick. 7 in order to clarify the salary cap space.
AFL Media reports Scott met with Bowes on Friday, while several other clubs are showing interest in the 24-year-old.
Geelong is among the sides interested in Bowes, who is being looked at as a midfield recruit rather than the halfback role he has played for large periods of his time at the Suns.
The decision will fall heavily on the shoulders of Bowes, who the Suns took with the No. 10 pick in the 2016 draft.
Speaking to AFL Trade Radio, Hawthorn list manager Mark McKenzie confirmed the club had interest in Bowes.
“From our point of view, that midfield area is important for us to find the right combination and Jack brings something a little different with the way he plays,” McKenzie said.
“Definitely some interest, positionally and obviously the right age of our group that’s happening, the age demographic fits as well. We’ll explore that avenue and see where it goes.”
Essendon are also eyeing Suns forward Josh Corbett, with a report that the Bombers, along with Fremantle and Melbourne, are interested in acquiring his services.

DEES DRIVES A HARD BARGAIN FOR JACKSON
Melbourne is reportedly seeking a top-seven draft pick as well as a future first-round pick in exchange for Luke Jackson.
Jackson requested a trade to Western Australia earlier this month, with Fremantle heavily favored to acquire his services.
The Dockers’ draft hand is thin heading into the trade period, with the club only holding pick No.13 and pick No.72, as well as future picks.
AFL Media reports the Dees want a pick within the first seven selections of this year’s draft, as well as a future first-round pick for Jackson.
Still, the Dockers may be reluctant to reach too far into next year’s selections, with a wealth of WA-based talent entering their draft year in 2023.
The Dees, the report says, are not willing to add an extra pick to the deal.
West Coast has the No. 2 pick in this year’s draft but is not understood to be willing to trade it for Jackson, who the Dees selected with the No. 3 pick in the 2019 draft.
