Mohamed Salah signs a new three-year contract with Liverpool

Mohamed Salah has signed a new three-year contract with Liverpool.

BBC Sport understands that the deal, worth more than £ 350,000 a week, makes the 30-year-old the highest paid player in club history.

The Egyptian striker only had one year left on his previous contract and there were doubts about whether he would stay.

“It’s the best decision for us and the best decision for him. I think it belongs to us. This is his club now,” Reds coach Jurgen Klopp said.

“This is a special pleasure for our fans to enjoy their weekend even more. I’m sure tonight there will be some celebrations for this news.”

Salah has scored 156 goals in 254 appearances during his five years at Anfield since leaving Rome.

The wide player said: “I feel great and I look forward to winning trophies with the club. It’s a happy day for everyone. We are in a good position to fight for everything.”

Salah has won the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and Uefa Super Cup during his stay at Anfield.

He has also won or shared three Premier League Golden Boots and has been named PFA Player of the Year twice while with Klopp.

“I have no doubt Mo’s best years are yet to come. And that says something, because the first five seasons here have been things of legend,” Klopp said.

The renewal is a big boost after the departure of his teammate Sadio Mané to Bayern Munich this summer.

Liverpool won the FA Cup and Carabao Cup this season, but played a quadruple until the last week of the season, fell short in the Premier League and lost the Champions League final to Real Madrid. .

They have recruited Benfica and Uruguay striker Darwin Núñez for an initial £ 64 million to make up for Mané’s loss.

“I think it takes some time to renew, but now everything is done, so we just have to focus on what’s to come,” former Chelsea striker Salah said.

“I think you can see that in the last five or six years the team has always gone [upwards]. Last season we were close to winning four, but unfortunately in the last week of the season we lost two trophies.

“We also have new signings. We just have to keep working hard, have good vision, be positive and do everything again.”

Talks had dragged on, but have accelerated in recent days and a delegation from the Reds, led by new sporting director Julian Ward, traveled to meet with Salah during his summer vacation to sign the contract.

Mike Gordon, president of Fenway Sports Group, owner of the club, also played a key role in the negotiations.

Gordon and Ward had face-to-face talks with Salah in Miami around the turn of the year and were important as that was when the broad structure of the deal was discussed.

Salah’s priority was to stay at Liverpool and the club’s was to keep him as areas of the contract continued to be settled.

The Egyptian international made it clear that he would not accept the sale and that his position was to renew or leave free at the end of the contract, which he has replaced and was due to expire in the summer of 2023.

The contract is structured in a way that fits Liverpool’s current model, but also rewards individual performance.

It is basically based on the reward for the level of goals and implications of the goals Salah brings.

This also holds another key figure in Liverpool’s success at the club, as in April coach Jurgen Klopp and his team extended their agreements with the club until 2026.
