TORONTO – There are now five known cases of monkeypox in Toronto, and the city’s public health unit is confirming three new cases of the virus.
Toronto Public Health updated the tracker on its website on Thursday, showing five confirmed cases and five others under investigation.
The first case of the virus in Toronto was confirmed on May 26.
Ten cases that were under investigation have been reported negative.
Toronto Public Health says anyone who has been in close person-to-person contact with someone who has smallpox can spread the virus.
Close person-to-person contact includes breathing drops, direct contact with skin lesions or body fluids, or indirect contact with contaminated clothing or clothing.
Health officials say the monkey’s smallpox is not easily spread among people and is not as transmissible as COVID-19.
Smallpox is a rare disease that comes from the same family of viruses that cause smallpox, which the World Health Organization declared eradicated worldwide in 1980.
