With more than 5,000 cases, the recent smallpox outbreak in Europe and North America has become a concern for many. While monkeypox was limited to Africa, where outbreaks have occurred for years, it generated little concern. We try to understand this phenomenon as well as explain the origins and nature of the disease, as well as ways to curb its spread.
