Brooke Henderson closed out the Amundi Evian Championship strongly on Sunday to win her second career major, with the help of three birdies in the final five holes.
The Smiths Falls, Ontario. native had a two-shot lead going into the final round in Evian-les-Bains, France, thanks in large part to becoming the first player in LPGA history to start a major with two rounds of 64 or less. The 24-year-old shot a fourth-round 71 to clinch her victory, finishing one shot ahead of American Sophia Schubert.
Henderson found himself in a six-way tie for first after bogeying the 11th hole, facing real adversity for the first time in days after holding the lead for most of the tournament.
“I stayed very patient, as patient as I could under the circumstances,” Henderson said. “Going into the back nine, the saying goes that majors are won on the back nine on Sunday, so I just tried to keep that frame of mind and knew I was still in it if I had a solid back. [nine].”
He closed strong to take sole possession of the first with back-to-back birdies on holes 14 and 15, and finally passed Schubert on the final hole with a birdie putt.

Brooke Henderson, a native of Smiths Falls, Ont., fought back from a bad start to win in France in one stroke on Sunday.
“Definitely not my best today,” Henderson said. “I just tried to be patient and remind myself that I was still there.
“I hit some clutch putts and shots down the stretch that really helped.”
The win marks Henderson’s first major win since the 2016 Women’s PGA Championship.
