Boris Johnson is reportedly being asked to cut taxes this year to safeguard his position as prime minister.
Mr Johnson’s own cabinet is putting pressure on him, according to The Times. A minister told the newspaper: “If we keep taxes at the rate, it will cost us now.”
It comes as Mr Johnson’s allies encourage him to abandon Rishi Sunak and elevate Jeremy Hunt to chancellor in an effort to strengthen his fragile leadership and prevent a conservative civil war.
The prime minister’s future at number 10 was weighed in the balance after a vote of confidence on Monday night that saw 148 Conservative MPs vote against him.
Mr Johnson’s allies are now looking at what they see as a “dream team” of him and Jeremy Hunt, according to The Daily Telegraph.
Meanwhile, Labor has called on the tax authorities to investigate the financial affairs of Health Secretary Sajid Javid, according to The Independent.

Labor calls on HMRC to investigate Sajid Javid’s tax affairs
The Labor has asked the tax authorities to investigate the financial affairs of the Secretary of Health, Sajid Javid, according to The Independent.
The party has written a letter to HMRC calling for a re-examination of the Cabinet Minister’s historic tax deals.
It focuses on the links of Mr. Javid with a company called SA Capital. These links increase the “possibility that you may have benefited from a loan plan designed to avoid paying UK taxes,” said shadow health secretary Wes Streeting.
