The first case of monkeypox in a person under the age of 18 has been identified in New York, according to health officials.
Data posted on the state Department of Health website says only that the case is in a patient who lives outside of New York City.
It is among the 192 probable and confirmed cases of the virus reported outside the Big Apple.
In New York City, there were 2,596 cases as of Friday, according to the city’s DOH.
The virus is usually spread through close contact with an infected person or by touching objects they have used, such as clothing or towels.
