Man dead after southeast Calgary bar shooting

Calgary police are searching for a man after a fatal shooting in the city’s southeast Sunday morning.

Police and paramedics arrived at the scene on 17th Avenue near 34th Street SE around 4:40 a.m. to find a man suffering from a gunshot wound.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said witnesses reported hearing gunshots and then saw a man run from the scene. The male suspect is described as approximately 30 years old, 6′ 2″ tall, with a medium build and short black hair.

Dozens of witnesses were still at the scene on Sunday morning as the investigation continued and police searched for CCTV.

People who live in the area say they are saddened to hear what happened, but say crime is a constant reality in the neighborhood.

One of them is Caitlin Verquin, who lives near the bar.

“It sounded really loud, it was banging or something,” Verquin said. “I thought maybe someone in the neighborhood just blew up, having a hard time, because this neighborhood isn’t really safe. There’s a lot going on in this neighborhood, especially at night.

“I love this city. I’ve lived in this city my whole life and to think something like this shooting is happening in my community, it’s scary,” he added.

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday morning.
