Breaking news live: blackouts see energy crisis; investors expect a rebound in the stock market; due decision on the minimum wage

Coalition Senator Matt Canavan has blamed the energy crisis in Australia for not having enough coal or gas power plants.

Speaking to Today, the former Minister of Resources said he did not win the argument while in government to build more coal and gas facilities.

“I’ve been trying for years to ask that we invest in reliable energy,” Today said.

“I have tried to denounce the fact that if you do not invest in energy that can be maintained all the time like coal or gas, power plants, you will run out of energy like us.”

This is despite the energy crisis resulting from failures of coal-fired power plants and high gas prices.

He accused the new Labor government of “putting up the white flag”.

“Chris Bowen has been saying there’s nothing he can do,” Canavan said.

“Maybe make sure you have an esky on hand in case you run out of energy and need to save some meat from the fridge.”
