King Charles III will be officially proclaimed monarch today at a Council of Accession that will be televised for the first time in history.

The King will make his declaration and oath at the Palau de Sant Jaume at 10 am.

He will be joined by the Duke of Cornwall and Cambridge, as well as Queen Consort Camilla, along with Prime Minister Liz Truss and her cabinet.

The Privy Council, which includes politicians, senior members of the clergy and Supreme Court justices, will first meet without the king to proclaim the new monarch and organize matters related to the proclamation.

The King will then hold his first Privy Council and make his personal declaration and oath to “assume the duties and responsibilities of sovereignty” and follow in his late mother’s footsteps.

A major proclamation will be read out in public for the first time by the league’s king-in-arms from the balcony overlooking St James’s Priory Court an hour later at 11am.

As the proclamation is read, The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery will fire a 41-gun salute in Hyde Park.

It will be followed by other proclamations around the country, with the second in the City of London at the Royal Exchange at noon today and further proclamations in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales at noon tomorrow.

Flags will fly at full mast from the Main Proclamation until 1pm on Sunday in recognition of the new monarch, when they will be lowered to half-mast to commemorate the Queen.

It comes after King Charles held his first audience with Mrs Truss at Buckingham Palace yesterday ahead of her televised address to the nation.

Despite his grief, he vowed to serve the people of the UK with “loyalty, respect and love”.

The King also paid tribute to his mother “love, affection, guidance, understanding and example”.

The King returned from Balmoral yesterday after rushing there when the Queen’s health deteriorated and became King when the Queen died on Thursday afternoon.

Earlier in the day, he made his first public walk and meeting since joining as he greeted well-wishers outside Buckingham Palace.
