Sydney nurse Jay is one of those leaving work today in protest of unbearable staffing levels at major hospitals.
Jay told Today he had just finished a 12-hour shift, skipping two of the three breaks allotted for lunch.
“Pretty tired, pretty defeated, which is pretty much how we go home every morning,” she said.
Jay said demand had been so high overnight that about 10 patients had been forced to wait while sitting on the floor in the hallways.
“We are defeated. We can’t give the care our patients deserve, so we can’t give them anything else,” he said.
And Jay means that literally the conditions have been so bad that he decided to look for a job somewhere else and on Friday his current job ends.
