The future of the NBA begins right now.
The 2022 draft has arrived and with it comes tomorrow’s brightest promise, rising stars and, if all goes well, perhaps some celebrations to raise banners.
It will only be revealed in time if these prospects can live up to the hype, but we know enough about their games and paper adjustments to make real-time assessments for each selection.
With red pens in hand, we are here to evaluate each selection.
Check again overnight as the teams make each selection.

The first curved ball of the draft comes with the first overall selection, as the Magic select Paolo Banchero, and not the often mocked Jabari Smith. For a team with such an obvious need for an offensive focal point (Orlando had no one with an average of 17 points), this is a swing for the fences and quite possibly a moon explosion.
If this draft class produces a scoring champion, Banchero is the odds favorite. Her offensive bag explodes at the seams with a decent slime mix of power, delicacy, shots, finishes and an unfair amount of pass for a 6’10 ”, 250 pounds.
Now, can you defend at the NBA level? Physically, he’ll be fine to get out from his first opening point, but at Duke, his defensive engine made a spark like a broken-down van. A good coaching staff can correct this flaw, however, as well as improve your selection of sometimes too ambitious strokes.
From my point of view, Banchero is the best and the best prospect in the class. Very well done job, Magic.

More than a few talented evaluators have Holmgren at the helm of their big boards, so OKC should be happy to have him at number 2.
If Holmgren can increase his frame by 195 pounds, be careful. It is now very difficult to handle without the added muscle. Large unicorns with ground space and edge protection are all the rage right now, and Holmgren gets his metaphorical horn from his combination of 1.3 three per game (at 39.0 percent) and 3.7 rejections.
Essentially, it’s a great intimidating and shot blocker that works as a jumbo-sized perimeter player that shreds the net at the other end. This is a tandem of easy skills to fall in love with, even if your slim body and half-track creation leave unanswered questions about your perspective.
He needs time, but Thunder can give him that. They can also provide shot creators to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Josh Giddey, who should help with Holmgren’s problems to generate looks in midfield.

Space City always sat in first place maintaining the third selection in a draft with a three-player level at the top. Although Smith was not the player most thought to fall into this position, what fell would be a no-brainer.
He may be the best shooter in his class, which is a big compliment to anyone, let alone a 6’10 “19-year-old. He impressed with the amount (2.3 triples per game) and quality (42.0 percent) during his unique career at Auburn, and all about his outside blow feels translatable to the big league.
It doesn’t have as much shot creation as is typically sought after with a selection of the top three, but it could tighten its handle over time and if it did, it would be unstoppable. Rockets fans will fall in love with their competitiveness, while Rockets coaches will feel the same about their defensive versatility.
Smith will widen the attack lanes for Jalen Green, while Green will find shots for Smith on the move. Smith’s mobility and defensive versatility should also make him fit in with Alperen Sengun, assuming Houston has the latter as his long-term center.

Sacramento got a clean roster and a player who should make a smooth transition to the league at Murray. But did the Kings take the best perspective off the board here? This is debatable.
Murray is simultaneously old for a big prospect (August 22) and young for his skill set, which seems to belong to an NBA veteran. His film is almost error-free and shows everything from multipositional defense and shooting to punctual passes (and goalkeeping) and sound instincts.
His shot may not live up to last season’s three-point percentage of 39.8, as he only shot 29.6 percent as a freshman and 74.9 percent on the line for his career. You also need to show that you can constantly create your own shot against professional defenders.
Murray is projected as a high-level glue. This archetype really helps good teams. How much is a game hopeful worth? It’s a solid selection, but you want more than solid from a number 4 selection.

Congratulations, Motor City. You could have the Association’s more electric rear-track combo sooner rather than later after the Pistons paired Cade Cunningham with Ivey, which emits serious Ja Morant vibes.
Ivey is the personified electricity. Combine the explosion of a runway star with the air crossings of a Cirque du Soleil performer to form a friendly arsenal. He presents himself as the most likely candidate to lead this kind of draft in viral moments.
Your jumper is often there when you need him, though it’s not what you might say consistent. It could also take your passing and track leadership to another level, but that’s probably true for any 20-year-old guard.
If a perimeter player emerges as the best player in this draft, Ivey is the most likely candidate. Detroit’s future lit up considerably Thursday.

If the Pacers are really becoming a rebuild (still waiting for Malcolm Brogdon’s trade, and perhaps also Myles Turner’s trade), then they are forming the perimeter trio to lead it. They selected Chris Duarte last summer, added Tyrese Haliburton to the change deadline and now complete the trio with Mathurin.
He is a high level athlete and shooter. If you don’t know anything else about their profile, at least acknowledge that there are reasons to get excited.
Right now there isn’t much creation in his game (for him or his teammates), and his defensive impact comes and goes. Still, it will give the Pacers a lot of perimeter shots and transition scores outside the gate, and they could eventually have real talent on their hands if they help solve their weaknesses.

Interesting. The Blazers, who need as much talent to win now as anyone else trying to quickly recover around 31-year-old Damian Lillard, have just picked among the top 10 someone who hasn’t played a year in a year. Back then, they also just hooked someone with a high ceiling at both ends, so it’s hard to complain.
The mysterious man in this draft, Sharpe never played any games for the Wildcats. This forced explorers and analysts to shoot images of his days in high school, where he dazzled as a nailer, shooter, and effortless shooter.
Still, he could face a steep learning curve in the league, as his handle and shot selection need a lot of seasoning. However, if everything breaks with his development, he could become a scorer who keeps teammates involved and stays defensive.
The audacity of the Blazers here is commendable. If there was a way to spend that selection and not make it lose commercial value, this would probably be the way to go, as Sharpe has such huge potential.

Assuming Zion Williamson leaves behind his health issues, a big hypothesis, but stay with me, the Pelicans have far fewer holes on their list than will make you think of their 46 losses. They could have gone anywhere here, and they were smart enough to catch the Daniels, who are growing fast.
He surprised the predraft circuit, how he should do it. Its size-skill combination is drool-worthy. He is the second jumbo (6’6 “) player to be snatched from Australia and planted in the lottery in so many years (joining last year’s No. 6 pick Josh Giddey). Whatever they do with big ones guards below, it obviously works.
As with Giddey, Daniels arrives at the Association with a jump shot, and the place where he finishes this time will determine what kind of career he has. Still, he offers too much as a versatile defender, slasher, game creator, and rebounder for not at least settling in as a role player.
Daniels feeding Williamson, Brandon Ingram and CJ McCollum should be a lot of fun. Daniels teaming up with Herbert Jones sounds suffocating at the other end. Good choice.

It’s hard to know how San Antonio’s long-term puzzle will take shape (especially with Dejounte Murray’s commercial rumors coming out this week), which is kind of a problem, as Sochan’s game doesn’t easily fit all the lists. .
He may be the most disruptive proponent of this draft, but he is also one of the least developed scorers (at least among lottery prospects). If he weren’t such a dynamic defender, he would be seen much more for his red-flag shooting rates from three (29.6 percent) and the line (58.9).
It is true that even with a suspicious jumper, his potential is off the lists. It can defend any position and operate as a 6’9 ”table assembler, £ 230. But unless his goal really takes off, he needs creators of shots around him, and San Antonio doesn’t have enough.
Having said all that, this development staff has the same opportunity as anyone to get the most out of it.

If the Magi keep Bradley Beal, then finding polished players makes sense. Davis scratches this itch.
It already seems like a problem for the NBA’s defenses, and that’s with the recognition that its triple is an ongoing job (30.6 percent in 2021-22). You can blow the bigger defenders and punish the smaller ones around the basket with an impressive arsenal of low stick for a 6’4 ”guard.
This perimeter shot is a question, though, and its efficiency dropped …
