Hudson Young’s last-minute solo save saved the Canberra Reds as the Raiders held on to the Knights for a spectacular 20-18 victory.

With the Raiders out of exchange options due to injury and James Schiller suffering a collarbone injury in the back game, Young saw Kalyn Ponga out of position in the third inning to drive a kick behind the line and cross under the sticks.

“I thought he wanted to get away from us,” Young told ABS Tribune after the match.

“[I] I don’t know why I kicked it, but I did. “

However, Young was more confident when he spoke to Fox Sports, saying the move had its beginning during the week.

“I saw him [Ponga] on the short side and in fact I told one of our coaches that I was trying to do it this week, so [I’m] glad he got it, “he said.

“I just played with my fist and I love my time right now.”

The Raiders were losing by four at the time after the Knights produced an impressive 14-0 comeback to advance 14-18 with time out.

The Raiders had three unanswered tries in 14 minutes of the first half through Nick Cotric, Matthew Timoko and Xavier Savage.

But the Knights, who were easily second best in the top 40, overtook Nick Cotric just before half-time, causing a spectacular comeback that bought them within two minutes of a remarkable victory.

With Ponga visibly distressed by a stomach complaint, the Knights were very likely to hook the Raiders.

However, a late shot at Elliott Whitehead’s Ponga that saw the Englishman sent to the bin and put in report gave the Knights the impetus to run over their hosts.

Mat Croker crossed to the next play with the Raiders at 12, followed shortly after by Edrick Lee to put the Knights ahead by two.

Lee thought he had a second with nine minutes left after Xavier Savage’s attempt to keep a 40:20 attempt in play was counterproductive.

However, the Raiders had great freedom when the Bunker correctly decided that Mat Croker hit when he challenged Savage.

This decision was crucial when Young bounced off an inning before exhausting himself to give Jamal Fogarty a simple conversion in front of the posts to save the victory.
