NWS confirms second tornado touched down in Chicago area Saturday

The National Weather Service confirmed two tornadoes touched down in the Chicago area on Saturday as a series of storms downed trees and brought strong winds to the area.

A tornado touched down in Crest Hill early this morning and moved to the north side of Joliet before leaving the area, the NWS said in a tweet. The tornado was rated an EF-0, the lowest level on the six-level Enhanced Fujita Scale, and had maximum winds estimated at 70 miles per hour.

Hours earlier, the NWS confirmed that a separate tornado touched down in Naperville. Also rated EF-0, it felled trees, overturned chairs and caused damage to roof tiles. The maximum wind speed was said to be 80 miles per hour.

More severe weather may be on the way, so you may not want to let your guard down just yet.

A chance for severe weather returns Saturday night into Sunday. Strong winds and heavy rain are again considered the main threats, with the possibility of a tornado.
