Vancouver Police Department spokesman Const. Tania Visintin said police were called to the gas station on Hastings and Skeena streets at 6:30 a.m. after witnesses saw a man in a vehicle hit a pedestrian.

The 61-year-old suspect allegedly got out of the car armed with a knife and machete and began chasing people at the gas station.

“He was supposed to punch a passerby, then turn his attention back to the pedestrian, stabbing him in the neck and back,” Visintin said.

“When he tried to steal a motorcycle parked at the gas station, officers stopped him (and arrested him).”

Visintin said at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, a man was seen driving the same vehicle in the Vancouver incident erratically while fleeing police in several Vancouver metropolitan cities.

“When police crashed the car, the driver allegedly crashed into the police vehicle and fled again,” he said.

“We don’t know if there was a reason for this attack, and the fact that it seems random and unprovoked is extremely worrying. The victims and the suspect did not know each other and did not appear to have any significant interaction prior to the attack.”

The 67-year-old stabbing victim was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

A video of the incident was videotaped and posted on social media.
