In their first preseason action of the 2022 NFL season, the New York Giants lead the New England Patriots 10-7 at halftime.
New York started the scoring on the game’s first possession as Daniel Jones and the first-team offense marched down the field for 13 plays and 68 yards. However, that drive was halted in scoring territory when Kenny Golladay dropped a pass inside the 5-yard line and the Giants had to settle for a field goal. Saquon Barkley was heavily involved in the game plan, with four carries and one reception. Gary Brightwell got most of the second-team work behind Barkley. The highlight of the half came from Richie James, who snagged the ball out of the air and pulled it down for a 26-yard gain after it was deflected on a Tyrod Taylor throw up the middle . James added a touchdown catch on a Taylor throw later in the drive.
New England’s touchdown came courtesy of rookie wide receiver Tyquan Thornton, who snuck along the backside of the end zone for a 2-yard pass from Brian Hoyer that gave the Patriots the lead. Thornton would later add another reception on a check by fellow rookie Bailey Zappe. Once the Giants’ second-team offense got into the game in the second quarter, the Pats made a big play in the form of a fumble recovery by Malcolm Butler, who scooped up the ball after the outside Giants’ Collin Johnson was stripped on a catch-and-run attempt. (Johnson was heavily involved throughout the half, hauling in seven receptions for 83 yards.)
Both teams looked a bit sloppy in their execution as they combined for 13 penalties and averaged just 3.8 yards per rush and 5.4 yards per pass. As we move into the second half, it’s likely we’ll see some of the lower roster players see a little more action, and we might uncover a gem or two along the way.
