Taberner scores the first goal of last season

Matt Taberner scored on the boundary line and kicked a tight goal to bring the Dockers within a point of the Tigers.

The first goal was always going to be vital in such a low scoring contest and Taberner stepped up when his team needed him most.

Tigers 46, Dockers 45 with 16 minutes to go.

3QT: Richmond 6.10 (46) to Fremantle 5.9 (39)

Scoring opportunities were limited for both sides that quarter, but Richmond made the most of their rare opportunities to kick a goal and extend their lead to seven points heading into the final quarter.

The Dockers need to find more scoring lanes in this final season or the Tigers will come away with a vital win.

Nat Fyfe’s hamstring injury hurt the Dockers more, but they still have enough threats up front to find a way to win this game.

Dockers having a quiet night ahead

Fremantle’s forwards are struggling to get into the game tonight with the team having kicked just five goals in almost three quarters of play.

They are missing leading goal kicker Rory Lobb, but their usually potent attacking side have had few chances so far.

Fyfe out, Colyer on as Sonsie kicks the opener

The Dockers wasted no time in pulling Nat Fyfe from the game after what appeared to be a hamstring injury.

Colyer will give the Dockers plenty of run and pressure so he could be a good addition.

But Richmond extended their lead after an outstanding goal from first-year player Tyler Sonsie kicked his first AFL goal.

Tigers 45, Dockers 37 with 12 minutes to go in Q3.

Fyfe leaves the field

Nat Fyfe appears to be dealing with another hamstring injury as he makes a cautious run to the bench.

Fyfe received treatment in the second quarter on his hamstring and was able to continue playing, but limped off the floor and into the locker room early in this third term.

Assistant Medical Director Travis Colyer is warming up.

From the ground: Tigers deserve leadership

By Peter Ryan

A tight game with Richmond deserving of a slight edge.

The Tigers’ scrums have been fierce, but they are struggling to convert their inside 50 into scores.

Richmond have tried Toby Nankervis and Ivan Soldo as deep-lying forwards in Tom Lynch’s absence, but their lack of direction is evident.

The Dockers were kept in it by the final class of veterans Michael Walters and Nat Fyfe.

This is a high-quality game, but neither team has won promotion.

HT: Richmond 5.8 (38) to Fremantle 5.5 (35)

Richmond still hold a slim lead, but the Dockers fought back to get back into the physical contest at the end of that quarter.

The Dockers were stunned in the second half of the first quarter by Richmond’s tackling and pressure, but were much stronger in the game and began to control possession late in the second term.

Andrew Brayshaw has a game-high 18 possessions, while Hayden Young and Will Brodie have had plenty of football, while Liam Barker with 14 touches and Trent Cotchin 13 touches lead the way for the Tigers.

All set for a knife-edge second half.

Walters with a classic goal

Michael Walters loves coming up with big goals for the Dockers and the veteran forward did just that with a neat low finish from the forward’s pocket.

Walters had a very sharp angle to work with, but he chipped the ball perfectly and it bounced into the goal.

Tigers 38, Dockers 35 with two minutes to go Q2.

McIntosh goals

Kamdyn McIntosh made a big play for the Tigers forcing a hold on the ball near the 50 line and then kicking the goal to extend the lead.

Richmond turned up tonight and the Dockers are still finding their feet.

Tigers 37, Dockers 28 with nine minutes to go in Q2.

Fyfe goals for Freo

Nat Fyfe continues to emerge as a dangerous striker coming up with a mark in the lead and then nailing his set shot to reduce the score to one point.

Fyfe did some good things tonight both on center rebounds and playing as a deep forward.

There have been doubts about his shot on goal, but he sent it over the middle.

Tigers 29, Dockers 28 with 16 minutes to go in Q2.
