There are mega mansions and then there are mega mansions that are worth $ 500 million. Loot is all about the latter.
The streaming series Loot has something its rivals can’t boast about: a $ 500 million mansion.
“It was listed as the most expensive property in history [listed] in human existence, “Loot co-creator Alan Yang told news.com.au.” When we were researching and exploring the location, we were finding these places and we said, ‘Yes, this is a mansion of 40 million or $ 50 million, what’s the next level? ‘
“So we pushed the crew to go further and further and further and further and further.”
Loot, as its name suggests, plays in a very rich sandbox. Her main character is a woman named Molly (Maya Rudolph), who discovers the infidelity of her tech tycoon husband (Adam Scott) after 20 years of living together.
In the subsequent divorce, she leaves with $ 87 billion, and a compulsion to find her purpose and herself through her charitable foundation.
Therefore, the mega mansion amazing and unfathomably expensive. The location is a real life home (if you can even call it home) in Los Angeles called “The One.” It has seven swimming pools, a garage for 50 cars and its own nightclub.
The world of super yachts, private jets and mega mansions Booty is very far from the small government offices of Parks and recreationwhere Yang and his co-creator Matt Hubbard first worked together.
Since then, Yang, an Emmy winner, has been behind some of the most praised works of the last decade, including the author’s. Master Chiefthe philosophical Forever and the personal film Tiger tailwhich was based on the experiences of his father migrating to the US from Taiwan.
But with Loot, he and Hubbard wanted to do something different, something more fun, and something with a higher proportion of laughs per minute.
“We talked about wanting to do another work comedy. We both worked Parks and Matt had worked 30 Rock. Those shows are a lot of fun and they ended up playing a lot of people.
“This project was a fun idea and a good change of pace, a little wider. We wanted to do a fun and entertaining show that also had some ideas and heart behind it, but something that is a little fun to watch.
“For me, personally, a couple of more dramatic pieces would come out and, over the last two years, the world is going through a lot more drama: a cataclysmic pandemic, insurrection, recession, gas prices are a million dollars per year gallon Can you come home and do a show that makes you laugh and bring you some joy?
“We definitely wanted to go a little more into comedy. We missed the era when comedy was a little bit more fun.”
Although Yang does not explicitly name Melinda Gates and Mackenzie Scott, the now ex-wives of Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos respectively, Yang refers to the “real-life analogs” of Molly’s character.
Rudolph had already worked with Yang and Hubbard Foreverso they knew she could pull off the comedy and pathos of a woman who has come out of an emotional trauma and long-term relationship to find herself alone, charged, and on a journey of self-discovery.
“We don’t have billions of dollars, most of us don’t, and we don’t have access to that kind of wealth, but I think everyone can relate to a breakup and to someone you built a life with.
“What is the challenge in your life to get back from this? Especially when you add to that, your spouse or partner was that person who was your whole world, and he was such an important and powerful figure on a global scale and, d somehow, you have been the most u of this person.
“In the back of your mind, in the deep, dark recesses of when you go to sleep at night, you’ve probably thought,‘ Is there more life than this? Is there anything else I can offer, like me? ‘
“This character wonders, ‘I have a bigger purpose, is there any other place I can go, what’s the rest of my journey?'”
This is the heart of Booty. The part of ideas comes to stealthily challenge the effect of extreme wealth, examining it through how Molly’s personal journey intersects with the awareness of rising inequality.
“I know it sounds great somehow, but this is the best scenario for this show. It’s kind of a Trojan horse, this idea of looking at why inequality occurs, who these billionaires are, what they’re doing with the world.
“If you get to the end of the first season, you’ll see that even Molly herself is under some sort of account and has a bit of a change.”
Loot is now playing on Apple TV +
