Blizzard Says Overwatch 2 Servers Experiencing ‘Massive DDoS Attack’

UPDATE 10/5/22: Overwatch 2’s launch continues to be plagued by DDOS attacks, with a second now affecting the game.

That’s according to game director Aaron Keller, who took to Twitter early this morning (UK time) to say his team would be “working through the night” to get the game back online.

“We are making steady progress on server and stability issues, as well as working through a second DDoS attack,” Keller wrote. “We are all on deck and will continue to work throughout the night. Thank you for your patience; we will share more information as it becomes available.”

We’ll keep you posted on the status of Overwatch 2 today.

ORIGINAL STORY 10/4/22: Blizzard says Overwatch 2 servers are experiencing a “massive DDoS attack,” preventing players from accessing the newly released game.

Players have reported unexpected server crashes and difficulty joining Overwatch 2 games throughout the night following today’s free launch, with some claiming to be experiencing queues of up to 40,000 plus players.

An earlier tweet from Blizzard boss Mike Ybarra acknowledged today’s server issues, but gave no indication that they might be the result of anything other than initial launch day issues, only thanking players for their patience and commit to “achieve” [them] to fun.”

However, Ybarra has posted a follow-up tweet suggesting that today’s launch of Overwatch 2 is affected by the malicious actions of a third party. “Unfortunately, we are experiencing a massive DDoS attack on our servers,” he wrote. “Teams are working hard to mitigate/manage. This is causing a lot of drop/connection issues.”

Blizzard’s social channels dedicated to Overwatch 2 remain a bit less informative. Tonight’s current server issues were briefly alluded to in a known issues post shortly after launch, but no further updates have been shared yet.

I will update the story as it develops.
