MATCH REPORT QUARTER TO QUARTER
First quarter
Lions veteran Mitch Robinson tried to assert his authority in the game early on, making several crunchy tackles, one of which resulted in a free throw to the Fire Department and a push and push between Robinson and Jake. Stringer.
“It’s a crack, that’s for sure, Mitch Robinson,” Bulldogs game record holder Brad Johnson told Fox Footy. “Yeah, I could have given a few free throws early, but he’s been in the game, and that’s all you can ask for.”
Triple Prime Minister Lion Alastair Lynch added: “This is part of the package. He will throw a few free throws, but at the same time investing in opposing players will only wonder where he is.”
Both teams found the rhythm with the movement of the ball early, but could not take advantage of the open game, failing relatively routine shots on goal.
“There’s an indisputable possession at stake. Space everywhere,” legendary Hawthorn goal scorer Jason Dunstall told Fox Footy.
Lynch added: “It’s almost like it was Thursday night, three-quarters pressure training, unless they were scoring goals.”
After the last five, three in Brisbane and two in Essendon, Sam Draper broke the drought of the goal, grabbing a strong mark near the square and quickly putting the ball on the ball, causing a celebration of the plane by of the ruckman of the Firemen.
The Lions then climbed onto the board thanks to Robinson, who faced the 50-yard forward with strength to score and nail a seven-pointer.
First-round pick Ben Hobbs responded immediately to kick off Essendon’s second, before Lincoln McCarthy clicked the quarter-time siren to make sure the two teams were tied at 2.3 (15) each in the first change.
Second term
Essendon started the second period strongly, moving the ball from his 50 back to the front arc where Kyle Langford was able to score and score.
And after Joe Daniher showed a fantastic footwork to throw one against his old team, Langford threw his second goal with a seven-pointer.
“It is possible that (the Lions) will have to pay some attention to this guy at some point. I’ve never seen a man run for more space, and he’s a player smart enough to get used to,” he said. Dunstall on Langford.
Oscar McInerney continued the goal-for-goal trend, with the Lions ruckman advancing to grab a disputed mark and throw Brisbane’s fourth major.
But Langford could not stay out of the game, winning a free kick near the goal and converting his seven-pointer to score three goals for the fourth.
And when Dylan Shiel really broke down and Peter Wright threw a seven-point shot at the end of the second period, Essendon had a 17-point lead.
“Wow, I’d love to hear Chris Fagan talk to the players in the middle,” Dunstall said.
“I can’t understand this configuration behind the ball. They’re doing waltzes from one end to the other without any pressure. “
Fox Footy’s Kelli Underwood added: “It’s been a forgettable first half for them.”
Essendon had a chance to level the score as Jye Caldwell suddenly found himself free in the middle of the box with only the keeper to beat, but he misjudged the finish, and only managed to hit the bar.
Still, the Fire Department had a good 16-point lead at halftime, which caused Lynch to say of the Lions, “They have big concerns.”
Third quarter
But Brisbane bounced back from their ruck shares early in the second half.
Darcy Fort nailed a long-range stop shot to keep his incredibly accurate streak in touch, while McInerney threw a long goal during the run to reduce the Fire Department’s lead to five points.
Fire skipper Dyson Heppell ventured into unfamiliar territory, keeping his feet in a 50-yard contest and scoring a rare goal before Wright nailed a major from a tight angle as the indisputable possession party continued.
“I haven’t seen a game like this Johnno in a long time where the movement of the ball and the transition from one end to the other has been so easy,” Dunstall said.
When asked if this was due to the Lions’ disorganization due to the variety of outings, Dunstall said, “I have no doubt that’s a big part. They just don’t have the same chemistry.”
Wright added a third goal to extend Essendon’s lead to 17 points.
But Essendon just couldn’t shake Brisbane, with McCarthy adding his third thanks to an exceptional pocket accessory before Robinson evoked something out of the blue for his second major.
Wright, however, responded again, scoring his fourth goal to make sure Essendon led by 12 points in the final change.
Fourth quarter
The Fire Department had the ideal start to the fourth term, with Langford finding space in goal and scoring a fourth goal, the highest of his career.
Charlie Cameron found a rare space within the 50s and turned it into a seven-pointer to keep the Lions in the mix.
EL 3-2-1 …
1. WHAT A LUCK DON CONJURED PB AND EXPOSED THE LION SHAKE
Essendon has been without Kyle Langford for most of this season due to injury. And on Sunday, useful ingenuity proved how valuable it is for this lineup of the Fire Department, both with and without the ball.
Langford, who came of age in 2021, spent 14 weeks on the sidelines after being replaced in the early stages of the first-round defeat of the Fire Department against Geelong.
He returned to round 15, but his third full game of the season was clearly the most influential, finishing with four goals, the highest of his career.
While both teams struggled to seize their chances in the first half, Langford finished clean in front of the big sticks, scoring three of Essendon’s five goals in the second season.
Four-time Hawk Prime Minister Jason Dunstall noted the amount of space Langford appeared to have during the game, and told Fox Footy, “Maybe (the Lions) will need to pay some attention to this guy at some point. “I’ve never seen a man run for more space, and he’s a smart enough player to get used to.”
But, as Bulldogs record holder Brad Johnson noted, the space Langford created was the result of his excellent work pace and the cunning tactics of the Fire Department that held the player accountable. number 1 of the Brisbane interception mark, Marcus Adams.
Because Adams was often in charge of Langford during the second term, the Fire Department tried to expose the Lion and find Langford within 50. He paid dividends.
“We know Adams really likes going to support the air defense … but Langford is an engine,” Johnson told Fox Footy.
“He has a midfielder mentality as a striker, so he likes to move, generate and have the ball in his hands as often as possible.
“He’s been very smart with his positioning and his brands in the 50’s.”
