NFL player Damar Hamlin has “shown marked improvement” in the past 24 hours and appears to be “neurologically intact” as the Buffalo Bills star continues to recover from an on-field cardiac arrest.

Doctors at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center said the 24-year-old remains “critically ill” in the hospital, but he woke up Wednesday evening and was able to ask who won the Bills’ game against the Cincinnati Bengals communicating it in writing.

At a press conference on Thursday, Dr. Tim Pritts said: “Last night he was able to go out, follow orders and even ask who won the game. When we answered Damar when he asked who won the game we said, ‘Yes, you won. You won the game of life.'”

Earlier, Hamlin’s agent, Ronald Butler, told The Associated Press that Hamlin was awake and able to hold the hands of family members outside his hospital.

A statement from the Buffalo Bills said: “To the doctors treating Damar Hamlin at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, Damar has shown remarkable improvement over the past 24 hours. Although he is still critically ill, he has shown that he appears to be neurologically intact. His lungs continue to heal and he is making steady progress. We are grateful for the love and support we have received.”

Hamlin’s family thanked the fans and praised the work of the medical staff and the support of the Bengals and coach Zac Taylor. “We are deeply moved by the prayers, kind words and donations from fans across the country,” read a statement Tuesday.

Andy Gorel: The Damar Hamlin incident is a reminder to all of us

The air that had arrived at Cincinatti’s Paycor Stadium was unsettling. Players, fans and coaches, from both sides, were completely and utterly upset by what they had just seen. However, word had somehow gotten out that the NFL had notified the parties involved that the game would resume in five minutes.

Shortly after, the game was announced as “Temporarily Suspended” until further notice. Meanwhile, an update had made its rounds online that Hamlin was having a pulse, but he couldn’t breathe on his own.

Confusion, devastation, panic—all these emotions it visibly affected the players and coaches, as they remained in the field, walking back and forth, conversing, even praying in response to what they had just seen. In the official broadcasts, no word was given about the injury.

As we, as a society, dealt with the trauma of seeing a perfectly healthy 24-year-old human being spontaneously collapse on the floor, the conversation swirled online. From fueling suspicions about vaccine-related conditions to recalls similar episodes of cardiac arrest in professional sports in years pastMonday night’s incident left nearly every viewer in agreement on one thing: The game should not go on.

Andy Gorel explains how Monday night’s incident made us feel:

Andrew Buncombe: All of us who watch this brutal, yet exciting sport are responsible for what happened to Damar Hamlin

After 24 years, Damar Hamlin of the Buffalo Bills is getting back on his feet quickly. It seems to be fine. But after two steps, he collapses, falling to the pitch, unable to move.

We know that medical personnel who rushed to the field had to restart the player’s heart, before he was evacuated by ambulance and taken to the hospital, as players from both the Bills and the Cincinnati Bengals sat or they prayed, completely bewildered.

The young man was said to be in critical condition at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where he has been sedated and is undergoing “further tests and treatment.”

There were an outpouring of emotional messages of support from fans and players alike, wishing Hamlin a speedy recovery, especially from Tee Higgins, the Bengals player he collided with. “I’m praying you do bro. Love,” he wrote on Twitter.

But is that it? Is that all that will happen? It is the only inspection that will take place after this game, which was only suspended after the accident, after the intervention of the two coaches.

Andrew Buncombe gives his take on the Damar Hamlin incident:
