The man is in a stable condition with a lower body injury, according to paramedics, who were called to the Alphington site at around 7.15am.
He has been taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital after “a high-angle rescue”, in which emergency service workers carried him down the crane shaft on a stretcher.
It is believed that the worker may have fallen halfway down the shaft.
