‘I’ve Never Been Dethroned’ Makes Netflix’s Top 10 List for Amazing Show

Never Have I Ever has to be one of Netflix’s most successful original comedies right now this side of Bojack Horseman, as it’s the rare comedy series that dominates the top 10 when it arrives and stays there for quite a while time

However, despite spending a week at the top of Netflix’s top 10 list, Never Have I Ever has been dethroned by a new show. Well, it’s not a new show in this case, an old show, the one it previously dislodged, The Sandman. But the situation is a bit strange.

It’s not just because The Sandman is so popular that it returned to the lead after people finished Never Have I Ever. That’s because The Sandman, two weeks after release, took the extremely unusual step of releasing a secret eleventh episode to join the original ten from the first season.

The episode included two standalone stories, A Dream of a Thousand Cats and Calliope, which didn’t quite fit into the original run, but were filmed and Netflix and the showrunners wanted to air them all anyway. But rather making them a somewhat absurd ending to Season 1, they ended up deciding that the best time to release the bonus episode was now, after the Watchers were done, creating a rather unusual situation that almost we’ve never seen Netflix before. But they wanted it to be a secret surprise this way. It seems to have been enough to propel The Sandman to #1, though I’d expect it to be short-lived once people get over the new episode.

The show that might be #1 by the time I even finish writing this is the new series Echoes, the critically acclaimed mystery about a pair of twins where one goes missing, starring Michelle Monaghan and Matt Bomer. But a poor review has never stopped a Netflix series from climbing the list, and it looks like it may be the next number one for a spell.

Never Have I Ever has dropped to third place, but its location won’t decide its fate, unlike most Netflix shows. Because? Because that’s already all settled. Netflix has already renewed Never Have I Ever for a fourth and final season, where it will be Devi’s senior year, take her all the way through high school, and end before the show does some kind of awkward college breakup with the cast. The show has just lost Paxton since he graduated, but it’s unclear what role he may still end up playing in Season 4 as an ASU student.

So I expect the list to change a bit for a while here, with this odd Sandman episode throwing a wrench in the usual machinations. My guess is that Selling the OC will hit #1 when it opens next weekend.
