Speaking to Laura Kuenssberg, Ms Truss defended her planned tax cuts and denied they are a “gamble”

Former minister David Davis said Truss should not repeat Boris Johnson’s “mistake” of appointing only loyalists and urged her to “weave the party”.
“It is not only in the interest of the party, but in the interest of doing serious politics and winning the next election. None of this is possible with a divided party,” he said.
And Scotland’s first minister, Nicola Sturgeon, warned this morning that Mrs Truss would be a “disaster” for the UK if she ruled while campaigning.

The race for the leadership of the Conservative Party to replace Boris Johnson will finally end on Monday, as it seems to have been going on since the dawn of time.

Cost of living crisis ‘is hurting children’s education’
Dr Patrick Roach, general secretary of the NASUWT, said the survey results paint a “deeply disturbing” picture of the impact the cost of living crisis is having on children.
“There is no doubt that the cost of living crisis is harming education, learning and student development.
“An emergency response is needed to provide extra help to children, schools and families.
“At a time when many teachers are already struggling financially, many have reached into their pockets to provide urgent help to their students, in the absence of additional support from the Government.
“It’s outrageous that we see more and more families struggling or unable to feed, clothe or keep a roof over their children’s heads,” he said.
Dr Roach said it was vital that schools and wider children’s services had funding to provide more support, advice and counseling to children, parents and carers who were experiencing difficulties.
“Unfortunately, the Government has simply failed to recognize the depth, breadth and urgency of the financial difficulties facing a growing number of families.
“Schools and teachers cannot be left to deal with the cost of living crisis or to provide out of their own budgets financial aid and assistance to families who desperately need it.
“We need to see immediate action from the new Prime Minister to provide much more help and assistance to children and families to mitigate the severe financial crisis facing millions of people this autumn and winter,” he said.
