“Logan” director James Mangold responds to Hugh Jackman’s return as Wolverine

Wolverine and Logan director James Mangold had some thoughts on the announcement that regular collaborator Hugh Jackman would be reprising his iconic role in Deadpool 3 .

Mangold took to Twitter and, without referencing the ad or writing a word, posted a gif of Wolverine’s X-24 clone Logan impaling the original Logan on the horn-like root of a tree stump. ‘tree, a major contributor to the series of wounds that eventually killed the long-lived mutant in Mangold’s film.

Fans immediately began reacting with comments ranging from the accusation: “You’re not the last word on Wolverine”; to the legalist: “Logan was never canon because they said a mutant hadn’t been born in 20 years”; to the triumphant: “everything is possible in the Multiverse!”

Several hours later, Mangold was forced to abandon subtlety and make his intent clear.

“Oh my goodness!” Mangold wrote. “Everyone calm down. Just kidding! I’m fine! LOGAN will always be there. Multiverse or prequel, time warp or wormhole, canon or non-canon or even without a justification, I can’t wait to see what craziness [sic] my dear friends @VancityReynolds and @RealHughJackman cook!”
