Man dies injured in Come By Chance refinery fire

A man caught in the Come By Chance refinery fire has died.

Glenn Nolan, the president of the United Steelworkers union in the area, confirmed on social media that Shawn Peddle died last night after being hospitalized as a result of the September 2 workplace incident.

Nolan, in his Facebook post, says the union is asking the RCMP to investigate the incident under the provisions of the Westray Bill, Bill C-45, as they believe the death was preventable.

Braya, the company that is converting the former refinery into a producer of renewable fuels, confirms that a man injured in the September 2 workplace incident has succumbed to his injuries.

They say the man was a well-known worker and an integral part of the team, but out of respect for the family they did not confirm his identity. They send their thoughts to their loved ones and say they continue to offer trauma counseling.

As the matter is under investigation, they will not comment further.
