Here in Ukraine, we have spoken to a number of teachers who serve in the army but who are still finding ways to continue the education of their students.
One of them is Fedir Shandor, 47, who teaches sociology and tourism from the trenches.
We spoke to Iryna, one of her students, who said Shandor’s dedication to her work has helped keep participation numbers high.
“Even students who would skip classes earlier, attend every lecture,” he said. “He’s always told us we have to be smart, that we fight for a smart nation.”
According to the Minister of Education of Ukraine Serhiy Shkarlet, about 900 teachers have joined the armed forces so far.
