‘The Callisto Protocol’ Gets PC Patch After Being Buried In Angry Steam Reviews

Callisto Protocol

Callisto Protocol

The Callisto protocol has had a bit of a rough launch with halfway decent reviews, but a strange situation with performance. It seems to run better on PlayStation than Xbox, leading to conspiracy theories about the Sony engineers who helped work on the project. And somehow, its worst performing platform is PC, where for some, the game was barely playable.

It’s basically a reverse situation of Cyberpunk 2077, where at launch, the best platform was PC, but console was way behind. Today, The Callisto Protocol released a patch aimed at fixing some of the PC issues:

However, this did not come in time to save the game from a tsunami of negative reviews on Steam. The game has just 46% positive reviews, firmly in the “mixed” category, though it’s up from yesterday, where it came in at “Mostly Negative.” Metacritic has not yet opened user reviews for the game.

PC issues don’t seem to be ultra consistent, with some saying the game is fine minus a few hiccups, and others saying it barely works and won’t stop stuttering and crashing. Hopefully today’s patch fixes most of the major issues, but the question remains, why was it released in this state in the first place?

The game has a 76 on Metacritic from critics, but those were critics playing the PS5 copy of the game, which is where it’s supposed to perform best.

So opinions and performance are all over the place. We’ll have to see how the game performs overall as one of the last major holiday releases. Many are hailing it as an exciting new entry into the survival horror space. Others say it struggles with even the basics of combat, outside of these performance issues. It’s a wide range.

Looks like things may stabilize here, if not with this patch, then with a couple more. And Callisto Protocol isn’t as high of a release as something like Cyberpunk, so it’s not like its issues are dominating the headlines for long. If he can pull it together, he can do well here in no time. Although he has work to do, of course.
