The York region says it has confirmed its first two cases of monkeypox, and the two infections are not connected.
“Human smallpox is a rare infectious disease and the risk to most people in the community is considered very low,” said Dr. Barry Pakes, a health officer in the York region.
“Public health in the York region continues to monitor the situation and follow up with all close contacts in both cases, who have been adequately isolated,” Pakes said.
Officials said the monkey’s smallpox is caused by a virus that does not spread easily among people, but that spreads through contact with body fluids, including contaminated clothing or bedding. It can also be propagated through respiratory droplets after “prolonged” face-to-face contact and by animal bites and scratches.
“Like other diseases that spread through close contact, people can reduce the risk of exposure to monkeypox by avoiding close contact with those who are not well, practicing good hand and respiratory hygiene and practicing safer sex, ”the York region said.
