now, dead spaceThe director of, Glen Schofield, is back with Callisto Protocol. He and his new studio took what worked for this classic and turned it up to 11.
“I asked them what kind of game they were trying to create,” he says the boys star Karen Fukuhara, who plays central character Dani Nakamura in the game. “And they said they wanted it to be the scariest survival horror game ever made.”
Although only time will tell if he will win this lofty title, Callisto Protocol It’s certainly creative and visceral enough to get your blood pumping.

Making of horror
The Callisto Protocol puts you in the shoes of Jacob Lee, played by Josh Duhamel, fighting for his life in a prison colony on the titular moon of Jupiter. But something even more sinister than imprisonment lurks in Callisto: something has turned many of the inhabitants into violent, grotesque mutants called Biophages.
Biophages range from zombie-like monstrosities to more “evolved” aberrations, eager to rip your head off your spine in the blink of an eye. And you have to fight your way through hordes of them as they wait in ambush. But it’s not the creatures themselves that make the game scary. Rather, it is everything around they.
“The truth of the matter is that everything is leading to a scare or some kind of scare,” says director Schofield. “Because what’s tension without a scare at the end or somewhere along the way? Everything is building to something.”

According to Schofield, Callisto is inspired by titles like Resident Evil i silent hillas well as movies like alien i The thing – and it shows. The atmosphere keeps your nerves on edge. You’ll walk through dimly lit, blood-soaked corridors, listening to monsters snarling and writhing in vents until one of them suddenly jumps out at you from the shadows, forcing you to scramble out of its reach.
The sound design is also excellent. Immersive audio enhances the discomfort, from the creatures you encounter to the game score. The developers used a unique instrument, the Apprehension Engine, which specifically makes creepy sounds, to add to the game’s hellish soundscape.
Even doors can be scary. They groan and screech as they open into the next area, revealing trails of mutilated corpses and screams reverberating around them.
But despite the bleak atmosphere, there is still time for an interesting story discovered through audio logs and emotional moments that move the story forward. You come to care about the characters and understand their plight, giving you reasons to continue and see their journey.
All courage, all gorey
The game, however, gets a 100% “M for 17+” rating, with “Blood and Gore” and “Intense Violence”.
You will die. Punishing combat will result in frequent games that are hard to watch. You will see Jacob pulverized and dismembered in every way imaginable to remind you that you failed. Successful players will see their enemies suffer the same fate, and it’s extremely satisfying to hit and shoot the biophage.

Over time, you’ll learn the kill-or-be-killed rhythm of the game. Callisto It also gives you an extensive arsenal, including a hand cannon, a shotgun, and the Gravity Retention Projector (GRP), which lets you pick up enemies and launch them into fan blades and other hazards. It’s a strong upgrade from other survival horror games, which can give you a knife and maybe a few bullets for your pea shooter.
“My thought was ‘no, you can do more than that.’ You could have more [than] that and it’s still survival horror. And so we put it in your face,” Schofield said. “I think we’ve really evolved combat into a horror game.”
Schofield also describes it Callisto as a “thinking person’s horror game”. It allows for a bit of strategy with your team, but the combat is so up close and personal that you’ll likely get bogged down and overwhelmed, swinging wildly at the nearest enemy and a mistake can be fatal.
There’s a reactive dodging mechanic, where you push left and right to weave telegraph attacks, but you can’t overdo it or Jacob will run out. You want to use your accessories and ranged weapons and have a game plan for when you run out of ammo.

final cut
While reloading familiar gameplay mechanics in the survival horror genre, Callisto Protocol provides a meaningful update of what has been done dead space such a revered classic.
There’s plenty of gore, but underneath it all is an intriguing story carried by compelling performances that humanize the characters as you unravel the backstory of Jacob, Dani, and the Black Iron Prison.
It’s not for the faint of heart, but if you’ve got the stomach for it there’s a lot to love. It’s challenging and unsettling, but with a little grit and courage, you’ll make it. Just be prepared to see poor Jacob’s face ripped off a few times.
